In the Deep End

Jumping in with both feet is something I’ve done most of my life, rarely giving a thought to the outcomes or end results. Who knew that doing it, literally could be so daunting.

I did something scary this week. But let’s get a bit of context first. I spend a fair chunk of my day alone. When I’m writing I need peace and quiet to hit the keys. Even the radio gets binned off. And so the solitude is welcome. I work alone, I do the weekly food shop alone, I run alone, I go to meetings and appointments alone, I iron school uniforms late at night alone, I read the Sunday Times alone, I sleep alone. It’s nothing new. For the most part, I like it.

So, doing something new, alone shouldn’t come as much of a shock to the system. But as I plunged, feet first into the water at my local pool, without my kids splashing about, or my friends telling me to behave and get some lengths done, I felt like I’d made a terrible mistake.

I’ve been feeling self-conscious of late. Probably the insecurity with my work situation and losing a bit of faith in the job application process. I decided to move my ass, instead of sitting around eating myself into a diabetic coma. I’m absolutely loving clocking up a few miles again. each day. I’m unlikely to challenge Shelley-Ann Fraser Pryce any time soon, but the mileage is coming along.

When I walk or run, I listen to this amazing podcast from APM Reports. It’s called In The Dark and you can check it out here. I’m on Season Two now and it rocks. But along with listening to true crime podcasts and reading a lot of crime/thriller novels, comes an uneasy feeling around secluded places. Like, my run route.

To mix things up again and get the thought of being dragged through some bushes to an ugly demise in my own backyard, I decided to squish my aforementioned ass into a swim suit and go to the pool. It seems so alien to be there without the kids. I’ve literally never gone to a swimming pool on my own, set myself a challenge in terms of how many lengths I want to wrack up, and achieved it. It’s so normal, yet so out of my comfort zone. I’m also 100% less likely to be dragged through bushes at the pool. So, win win.

I paid my entry fee. Faffed around with the locker. Damn lockers. And walked out to the shallow end of the pool. My eye sight is absolute pants and without glasses I couldn’t quite read the time on the clock at the far end, 25m away. But sure enough, I pushed off and swam. Minding my own business. Clocking up some exercise. By 25 laps I felt a bit less weird. When it was around 40 minutes later, I decided I was done.

Walking home afterwards I felt like I’d reached a new level of adulting. Look at me, I went for a swim, on my own! I’ve never felt like this about the weekly shopping or when all 15 uniforms are ironed and hanging up on a Sunday night. It felt scary to walk out there on my own, especially in a swimming costume – aint no body got time for that!

I’ve decided I’m all for little victories in 2020. Doing stuff for the first time. Doing the scariest thing or most dreading thing on your to do list, first and revelling in the sense of accomplishment. I hadn’t made a single New Years resolution. But now that I’m a fully fledged adult, who goes swimming alone and everything, I’m going to add a few more ‘scary things’ to my 2020 list and make it the most terrifying year to date.

I’m lacing up for Cash for Kids

It’s no secret that I absolutely love my Nikes and I’ve amassed quite a collection, so what better way to support Cash for Kids Superhero Day 2017 than by putting them to good use?

Cash For Kids

You can get involved in Superhero Day 2017 too, details below

I’m lacing up and embarking on an ambitious running challenge to raise much needed funds for local families in need. And it means I can wear a cape too….winner!

May 5th 2017 is SuperHero Day and Cash for Kids is supporting When You Wish Upon a Star, a charity that works tirelessly to grant the wishes of children with life limiting illnesses.

Having heard first hand from parents and patrons of the charity at the launch event at the Hilton Hotel, Liverpool One, last week, about the phenomenal experiences the charity organises for desperately poorly children and their families around the UK, I was moved to tears and inspired to help.

Just a snapshot of some of the wonderful experiences When You Wish organise for children and their families.

I have pledged to raise £250 in support of Cash for Kids Superhero Day 2017 and to hit my target, I plan to run 250km throughout the month on May. 31 days to rack up 250km, while also sustaining my job and family life and not twisting any ankles (I’m the most accident prone person EVER).

Family and friends will be loaded up with homemade cake, biscuits and honesty boxes to lure donations from their workmates, I’m going to attempt a sponsored silence (this will definitely require duct tape) in the office, and I’ll be rooting around in pockets and down the sofa for loose change, to help hit my target.

Cake for Kids

That’s worth £250 alone in my humble opinion

I’d really appreciate your support. As ever, just £2 can make a huge difference for those little ones and their families facing unimaginable pain. I’ve set up a Just Giving page to make it even easier to donate. Head over to www.justgiving.com/fundraising/KRJ and do something awesome for those in need.

This is how happy your donations make me!

I will of course be sharing my daily escapades on my social media channels with tweets and videos. Mainly Twitter, @Katereillyjames , Instagram @Kate.reillyjames and Facebook here and everyone who throws me a few quid will get a personal thank you x

You can also sign up to get involved with Superhero Day 2017 here.

Donate £2 and make a wish come true x

Woodlands Hospice Bunny Run 2017

On Sunday I got my face painted, donned a pair of rather fetching bunny ears, pinned on a fluffy tail ran 3.2 miles at the Woodlands Hospice Bunny Run 2017.

Croxteth Park had never looked so utterly stunning, bathed in early Spring sunlight, the hall itself was a hive (or should that be warren?) of activity as fundraisers, runners and tonnes of dogs, came together to support this Woodlands Hospice fundraising event.

Roped in by my friend and organiser, Pauline Cox, I signed up to run the 5k course with the lovely Michelle and Kerry and French bulldog Oscar (who completely won the day by being ridiculously cute!). We (just about) got through the warm up with PT Mark Riley before limbering up on the start line.

Woodlands Hospice Charitable Trust is an independent charity committed to delivering the best possible practice and development of Specialist Palliative Care for people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses with complex needs. It honours people’s right to dignity and respect at whatever stage of their illness by its aim to improve the quality of life for patients and their families

Woodlands Hospice

More than 50 runners, old and young turned out to support this amazing cause alongside a team of the most encouraging and smiley volunteers who clapped and cheered every single runner to the finish line. The Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Cllr Roz Gladden handed out medals to all the participants and laden down with Easter eggs and goody bags we set off for ice creams, fair rides and a well earned sit down.

Friday Night Disco

It’s Friday night, its 9:30pm and I am busting some serious moves…..sat at my desk….listening to Itunes shuffle…..in my running kit….despite only going as far as the wheelie bins in my front garden today.

It’s been an absolutely manic few weeks and I’ve racked up a good few miles just dashing from meetings to interviews to catch up coffees and lessons. I love that step counter app thingy on my iphone, you know the heart icon one that tells me how many bars of Galaxy I can have after my tea….I mean how many steps I’ve done.

IMG_0439

Proof that I got off my ass in 2008.

Despite all the dashing (I sound like a bloody reindeer) I’ve also spent an inordinate amount of time sat on my arse consuming sugar-laden Costa coffees which has done my summer body prep no good whatsoever.

It would appear that journalists spend a lot of time sat in meetings, in pubs, coffee shops on trains, buses and cabs. Journalists do not tend to carry out meetings while generally moving, at all.  And the last time I checked, talking (even the sheer amount that I do) does not burn body altering amounts of calories, nor does it tone bingo wings or create Victoria Secret model-esque body types. This is bitterly disappointing news.

It’s now March (silent scream) and I’ve not really made any effort whatsoever towards my dream goal of being a perfect size 10 for Grand National weekend, panic has set in.

So, as per my usual knee-jerk reaction to pretty much everything, I’m lacing my Nikes up first thing tomorrow and heading to the park with my sister to rack up some miles. Also typical me, I have signed up for Hellrunner which is a half marathon distance with obstacles (muddy bog, freezing river, big-ass hills) dotted through Delamere Forest in Cheshire. It’s either train for these type of events or live on dust for the rest of eternity, and my god I love cake, so that’s just not an option.

Wish me luck!

Edit- forgot to mention that my friends have now renamed me Cake Reilly. Sounds like Kate….its just that Cake is more me….or just is me. Yep.

6 Months and Counting

I bloody love a countdown, about as much as I love a challenge and 2016 will test me to the absolute limit.

September is a busy month for me with three little dudes starting new schools, seeing friends after the summer break, birthdays and re-settling into nursery routines. So in my infinite wisdom I thought, why not make that entire schedule more pressured by adding a whole new dimension.

September 11th welcomes the Tough Mudder challenge to the north west. A half-marathon distance littered with obstacles to test even the fittest of participants including ice, fire and gulp….electricity…not to mention all the mud.

This morning I have happily paid the grand total of £90 to take part in this frankly terrifying challenge, and that’s exactly what I love about it. Its a challenge, not a race. Its about camaraderie, team work and sheer determination.

It’s also about commitment. I’ve now committed to six months of serious hard graft to build physical and mental strength as I have none, zilch. (I had to mop my kitchen floor yesterday to stop me and the kids eating any more snacks before dinner) see….none!

So that’s me done, signed on the dotted line. I’m feeling positive, apprehensive but positive. I can train, I can conquer my fears and I can do this. There’s only one question left to answer now.

Who’s with me?

For more info and to hold my hand through this terrifying experience, check out Tough Mudder here. …please….anyone!?

Foul Ball

It’s been a whirlwind couple of weeks but its official, I’m a trainee journalist. I’ve spent my days immersed in short hand, public affairs, media law and news reporting. I’ve learned abbreviations such as IPSO and PCC and I can recite all 16 clauses of the Editors Code of Practise. Among the intense learning I also ran my first ever half marathon, The Great North Run and somehow managed to get three kids into childcare by 8am every day for a fortnight….and I’ve loved every minute of it.

I wish I could go back in time and visit 17 year old me and say ‘Stop being a gobby show off, embrace your love of English language and literature and focus on carving out a career for yourself….oh and lay off those Bacardi Breezers’  Would I have listened? I doubt it very much, I knew everything back then. 17 year old me

Fast forward 16 years and I’m slowly starting to feel like I’ve got my life together. I have a natural flair for chatting to people and engaging with businesses, so my next challenge is…..local sport! Tomorrow I’m spending the afternoon at Sefton RUFC to learn everything there is to know about rugby union (or proper rugby as my Dad calls it). I’m currently sat listening to the first match of the Rugby World Cup, England Vs Fiji in an attempt to naturally soak up some of the terminology and international players names! It’s not really working. I’m also making an appearance at not one, but two Liverpool golf clubs this weekend, again an attempt at on-the-job learning! I’m taking bets on how many injuries I’m going to sustain by Sunday dinner time?!i heart footy

The reason I’ve taken on sport it because it’s totally out of my comfort zone. I’m happy to sit and watch premiership games at the weekend, but (dare i say it,) I’m neither red nor blue. I really enjoy F1, Athletics and international Cricket. But Rugby, Golf and Snooker…….zzzzzzzzz. So I’ve gone way out of my comfort zone and I kind of figured that if I can accurately write up a 90/80 minute match while its unfolding right in front of me, I should have no problems with an equally fast-paced Fashion Week catwalk show…right?

I’ve resorted to watching some Youtube video’s on match commentary to help calm my nerves….that didn’t really work out either as most of them are hilarious. I must be more professional….. I wonder if I could get away with just shouting ‘a$$hole’ after each goal like this guy?https://youtu.be/wvnydzZXBEI

I’ll let you know how I get on!

Liverpool Loves The People’s Festival

What a weekend…and it’s still only Sunday afternoon! I’m currently holed up in Costa at Liverpool One (the only coffee shop I know of that’s open at 8am on a Sunday morning and freely provides plug sockets for laptops!)

Saturday morning began with a gentle 5km run around Croxteth Park….with my running buddy Adam and 186 other mad people who do that kind of thing for fun. I’m sure there are about a million other, more relaxing things to do on a rare sun-drenched weekend morning….but Park Run Croxteth was actually really good fun. The volunteers and marshalls are a lovely bunch and after receiving a round of applause for being a ‘first-timer’ I limped around in just less than 30 mins…….narrowly beating an 80 year old regular to the finish line. We’re so lucky to have so many beautiful green spaces on our doorstep in Liverpool, Park Run takes full advantage of that. Despite getting horse poop on my beloved neon Nike Lunar glide I will definitely be back next week.

After 30 mins disco nap (looking at social media on my phone…no sleep actually occurred) I got my game face on and headed into the city to meet my partner in crime, Caroline to sample Liverpool Loves, The People’s Festival. We stopped off for a quick Bayou sandwich in the sunshine at top Liverpool eatery Moose Coffee, Dale street…highly recommended!IMG_6123  The People’s Festival in a word….Wow! The atmosphere was awesome! A real mix of people and loads of little ones running about and busting moves to the live music. Armed with flutes of prosecco from the Circo bar we made our way through the raving toddlers to chat to local artists OneArt at Capstan’s Bazaar, sampled the most divine chocolate brownies with Ian from Treats bakeshop and overloaded on milk chocolate shells with Bala from The Chocolate Cellar…bit more prosecco…..we signed our LOVE messages with artist, Jay Wheeler….had a slightly tipsy chat with Jo from Water Babies about starting my little ones off swimming (Jo eyeing up my plastic pint of rekorderlig with envy) and finished up having a dance around at the Merseyrail Sound Station before a well earned rest on the hay bails to people watch and soak up the last of the rays. Phew! From my vantage point I watched couples doing tai chi and yoga, kids making elaborate fascinators and origami swans and glammed up hen parties making the most of the scouse hospitality! Talk about a festival for everyone!

Not sure if it was the 5km run earlier in the day but by 7pm I was getting far too comfy on the grass and decided to wobble back up to the city centre and head home. I’m gutted I missed the Rui Da Silva set on the big top stage but I caught highlights on twitter….from the comfort of my own bed! I’ll bet those toddlers were still giving it large long after I got home!

Thank you to Josh and the team at Orb Events, the Liverpool Loves festival was a really engaging, fun event and fully lived up to its tag line ‘Celebrate, Participate, Create’  Cant wait for next year! For more photo’s from The Peoples Festival please check out the inspiration page here.
