Dear Liverpool, I think I love you

It’s been one of those on/off things for 36 years. I think it’s love.

Adopted as my hometown, I grew up in this spectacular city. I’ve spent the longest time under one roof here (5 years) and moved away only to come running back when the shit hit the fan. I couldn’t be any more of a wool if I tried. Born on the other side of the world, my mums scouse roots pulled her back to Merseyside when I was just 7 weeks old.

Living in the North East for a while as a kid, my favourite memories of coming to Liverpool were going to the markets, bonfire night in Sefton Park and absolutely anything from Steve’s chippy in Aigburth Vale. Not much has changed.

I’d go back to my little market town with all the latest gear. Clothes, trainies, hair accessories. My country-bumpkin friends jealous of my modern threads. I first went to school in L8 at the age of 8 with a Geordie accent. Safe to say I was ripped mercilessly for that and it soon gave way to ‘shiiikkkkennn’.

After a stint in Germany I was back again at the age of 10 to join a rough as shit school in L14. Having the audacity to tower a whole inch over the tallest girl in my class, I got my arse handed to me one day after school and was promptly moved to the upper echelons of……another, much nicer L14 school.

I moved back home to Sydney in 2000 for a short time. After working the Olympics I fucked up massively and needed my family and familiarity. So I came home, properly home. That’s when I knew this thing with me and Liverpool was serious.

I’ve made life-long friends here. I made vows here. Twice. I made some of the most incredible memories within Liverpool’s cityscape that will stay with me until my last breath. I know this city like the back of my hand. Each and every bump. It’s soundtrack, pulse and layout.

Liverpool Women’s hospital is an important place on the map for me. It’s where I changed. I shed my skin and took a new path. I grew up.

All three of my incredible little dudes were born there. Aided by equally incredible, local staff who work around the clock delivering miracles. I left my dignity at the door in exchange for knowing what love really feels like.

I’ve truly lived here. My life has fallen apart here. I’ve grafted, cried, hurt, loved, messed up, laughed til it hurt. Walked home from town in the small hours, watched the sun come and go and stared, open-mouthed as the full moon passed over the illuminated Liver Birds – for real, this actually happened.

I love the people. The polar opposites of the north and south of the city, red and blue. The scouse-ims, the drive and ambition. I adore the ‘don’t give a shit’ and ‘because I said so’ attitude. More than anything I love the solidarity. Scousers care, they love hard. And because of that, so do I.

Say hi! Twitter & Instagram.

Pen For Hire

I’m finding it really difficult to concentrate today what with minute by minute social media updates from all my favourite journo’s at London Fashion Week.

But in order to join them, I must develop my own empire….sleeves rolled up…

“No-one can be successful for you.”

The world of work is a fickle one, and how to go about securing employment has mutated into an unrecognisable beast since I was last looking for work.

I fondly remember leisurely activities such as leafing through the paper, circling the job ads I thought I had a good chance of getting and posting (yep people, actually going to the post office and posting) a CV and longhand covering letter……and waiting weeks for a reply.

Do you remember how the job centre used to be? Those wall-mounted boards with all the hand written job ads placed on them? You’d write down the reference number and talk at length with an advisor about your chances of getting the job and how a role in nuclear physics at Sellafield might not be the most suitable position. (Genuinely applied, must have been feeling particularly optimistic that day).

Fast-forward to 2016 and applying for jobs, contracts, gigs, whatever you want to call it, is most likely done from the comfort of your sofa, bed, kitchen table with a response likely within hours rather than weeks.

Turning recruitment on its head entirely, apps and sites such as LinkedIn encourages employers to find you! Interviews conducted via Skype and Face-Time are common place and ensuring your online presence is as squeaky clean as your interview outfit is paramount.

Networking has taken centre stage when it comes to self-promotion in the jobs market. Liverpool is more like a village than a city, as a population of incessant talkers (I was told I can talk for NATO earlier this week…adding that to my cv) just a friendly conversation can lead to all manner of connections as everyone seems linked somehow?!

I love nothing more than getting to know people and hearing about their work, which should stand me in good stead being a journalist, right? Well the time has come for me to test that theory as I step out of the ‘trainee’ shadows and make good on all the conversations and training I’ve had over the last few months.

My first contract has been confirmed this week and I’m absolutely delighted to have been welcomed into the fold at The Guide, Liverpool. Joining a team that is dedicated to brining you the best ‘What’s Happening’ guide to our amazing city is a brilliant first step.

#IAMMPCT

I’m still walking around with a big smile on my face and wishing I was 16 again following my visit to the ACC Arena yesterday morning. I may only be an honorary Scouser, but I’ve never been more proud of this city’s youngsters.

The last of the September sun shone brightly over the Albert Dock as training providers, students, parents and press flocked to see what the Motivational Preparation College for Training (MPCT) can offer the young people of Merseyside….and the launch event knocked my socks off!

The MPCT encourages learners to be the best possible version of themselves through education and motivational learning methods. Only, this isn’t your run of the mill sixth-form college. Students take part in daily inspection, drills and adventure training along side classroom based vocational qualifications. The flexible training programmes are aimed at 16-19 year olds and offer support and guidance from enrolment right through to employment, enabling students to make informed choices about their futures.

Yesterday I heard first hand from teenagers who’ve overcome deeply-personal issues with traditional schooling and social problems. They spoke about their experiences with positivity and acceptance, another testament to the emphasis the college puts on building confidence and emotional wellbeing in preparation for the world of work. A number of students took to the stage to speak about their journeys through military preparation training and how it has instilled in them important life skills like taking pride in their appearance, punctuality and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. (Find me a parent who wouldn’t marvel at a teenager taking pride in ironing their own uniform and laying off the pot noodles!) #IAMMPCT

16 year old Nicole made a huge impression on me. Currently the only girl on roll at the newly opened Liverpool branch of MPCT, Nicola said there was no point in starting a two year A level course having gained her GCSE’s this summer, because her heart wasn’t in it. She is focussed on becoming a combat medic and is working hard to ready herself for selection into the British Army next year. I’ve never met a more mature, determined and out-going teenager. She made me want to up my game.

During the launch event the young recruits showed off some dynamic (and very loud) drill displays, complete with bellowing staff sergeant and hyper-active PT…..every one of those kids was in perfect sync (no tik-toking on this parade) smiling and having a blast showing off their new-found skills.

Every student at the launch made a lasting impression, their desire to achieve is infectious. I sat typing up my notes afterwards feeling proud. Liverpool can only benefit from more success stories to inspire the next wave of kids approaching 16 and beyond. And whether its a career in the Armed Forces or on ‘civvy street’ they aspire to, I can only echo Councillor Ian Francis in thanking MPCT for providing this unique training opportunity for Merseyside’s youngsters.

Guest Blog: How Many Could You Eat?

The Liverpool Loves event came to a sensational end on Saturday with The People’s Festival at the Pier Head. Local charities, talented artists and delicious street food entertained and thousands gathered to enjoy everything Liverpool has to offer.

My personal favourite activity of the day were the BROWNIES…and the magical folks down at Treats Bake Shop might have just created the ultimate brownie…..meet The Oreo!

In all its glory. This majestic brownie was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever laid eyes on. By the time I worked my way around to the Bake Shop stall, Ian (wizard baker extraordinaire) had sold out of the other Treats specialty flavoured brownies such as triple chocolate and chocolate orange….and it was only 2pm! Sadly I had to wait all day until I could proudly display the Oreo beauty upon my flatmates Cath Kidston plate and pour myself the obligatory glass of milk. Chocolatey torture!

The gooey goodness was sublime, thick and bouncy and still moist despite sitting my bag for 6 humid hours whilst I drank far too many ciders. The Oreo parts were to die for, with crunchy biscuit and fluffy cream centre that complimented the gooeyness of the brownie perfectly! Are you drooling yet? You should be!

As a self-confessed brownie connoisseur, I highly recommend Treats Bake Shop to everyone for any occasion! Had a bad day? A brownie can fix that. Had an awesome day? A brownie will make it even better! Plus they are a lovely bunch who wouldn’t judge you for buying 16 brownies knowing fine well you’ll eat them all in your comfy pants whilst binge watching The Great British Bake Off. You can find Treats Bake Shop on Facebook here!

Liverpool Loves The People’s Festival

What a weekend…and it’s still only Sunday afternoon! I’m currently holed up in Costa at Liverpool One (the only coffee shop I know of that’s open at 8am on a Sunday morning and freely provides plug sockets for laptops!)

Saturday morning began with a gentle 5km run around Croxteth Park….with my running buddy Adam and 186 other mad people who do that kind of thing for fun. I’m sure there are about a million other, more relaxing things to do on a rare sun-drenched weekend morning….but Park Run Croxteth was actually really good fun. The volunteers and marshalls are a lovely bunch and after receiving a round of applause for being a ‘first-timer’ I limped around in just less than 30 mins…….narrowly beating an 80 year old regular to the finish line. We’re so lucky to have so many beautiful green spaces on our doorstep in Liverpool, Park Run takes full advantage of that. Despite getting horse poop on my beloved neon Nike Lunar glide I will definitely be back next week.

After 30 mins disco nap (looking at social media on my phone…no sleep actually occurred) I got my game face on and headed into the city to meet my partner in crime, Caroline to sample Liverpool Loves, The People’s Festival. We stopped off for a quick Bayou sandwich in the sunshine at top Liverpool eatery Moose Coffee, Dale street…highly recommended!IMG_6123  The People’s Festival in a word….Wow! The atmosphere was awesome! A real mix of people and loads of little ones running about and busting moves to the live music. Armed with flutes of prosecco from the Circo bar we made our way through the raving toddlers to chat to local artists OneArt at Capstan’s Bazaar, sampled the most divine chocolate brownies with Ian from Treats bakeshop and overloaded on milk chocolate shells with Bala from The Chocolate Cellar…bit more prosecco…..we signed our LOVE messages with artist, Jay Wheeler….had a slightly tipsy chat with Jo from Water Babies about starting my little ones off swimming (Jo eyeing up my plastic pint of rekorderlig with envy) and finished up having a dance around at the Merseyrail Sound Station before a well earned rest on the hay bails to people watch and soak up the last of the rays. Phew! From my vantage point I watched couples doing tai chi and yoga, kids making elaborate fascinators and origami swans and glammed up hen parties making the most of the scouse hospitality! Talk about a festival for everyone!

Not sure if it was the 5km run earlier in the day but by 7pm I was getting far too comfy on the grass and decided to wobble back up to the city centre and head home. I’m gutted I missed the Rui Da Silva set on the big top stage but I caught highlights on twitter….from the comfort of my own bed! I’ll bet those toddlers were still giving it large long after I got home!

Thank you to Josh and the team at Orb Events, the Liverpool Loves festival was a really engaging, fun event and fully lived up to its tag line ‘Celebrate, Participate, Create’  Cant wait for next year! For more photo’s from The Peoples Festival please check out the inspiration page here.

Liverpool Loves

This morning I met 150 people in less than an hour…..nope not another disastrous attempt at speed dating…but an utterly brilliant business festival at the iconic Cunard building….welcome to three day festival..Liverpool Loves.

As a trainee journalist with a passion for everything marketing, PR and art based in the north west, I thought it would be a good idea to meet as many local companies and training providers as possible to find out first hand, how local businesses and media agencies build working relationships. I’ve been away from the north west for almost 3 years and Liverpool as a city has evolved into something almost unrecognizable. Business is booming, job opportunities for self-starters and apprenticeships are growing and there is a whole host of independent traders popping up, making the city center more diverse than ever before. Liverpool is an exciting place to be.

I couldn’t have picked a better event to begin my learning journey. I chatted easily with many passionate, friendly people and I came away feeling overwhelmed but elated with a tree worth of printed information about tailored support and mentoring. The Women’s Organisation, Launch 22 and Agent Marketing all providing practical solutions, training opportunities and advice that really opened my eyes to how media and business work hand in hand to reach wider yet specific audiences, enabling new start-ups to flourish. I enjoyed today immensely and feel much more confident about approaching the companies I have an interest in. My (humble) advice if you have a business idea, want more information about starting out or just want to feel inspired by people really making a go of it….be confident….get off your bum and go speak to them…..buy them a coffee and have a chat….they’re human too!

As per my tweet earlier today. Hats off to Liverpool Loves organizers Orb Events CIC if the business festival was just the launch event…the next two days of music, food, health and well being are going to be truly spectacular. I’ve added my photos to the Inspiration page, can you spot any famous faces?
